 Doubles finals
Williams sisters bow out at the double
Trying to get 9,000 people out on a Monday lunchtime to watch a game of doubles sounds like an unforced error. But Venus and Serena Williams made it into a winner.

Double triumph for Wimbledon sister act
Wimbledon's favourite siblings wrote themselves into the history books for the second time this week, becoming the first sisters and the first African-American duo to win a Wimbledon doubles title.

Woodies go out on a high
It appeared to be the perfect farewell by the Woodies but it was misleading.

Weekend results

 Men's final
Sampras reigns supreme
It could never have occurred to Pete Sampras that he would finally rewrite tennis history at 8.57 on a Sunday evening, but on a rain-affected final day the greatest grass-court player of the past 10 years, and arguably of all time, won his seventh Wimbledon men's singles title

Emotion alone gets better of champion
After executing the by-now customary clamber up to family members in the stands, the new seven-times Wimbledon champion could hardly be expected to resist the equally customary American tribute to Mom, Dad, the fiance and God.

Old adage brought artistically to life
As anyone will tell you, the secret is in the knees. It doesn't matter whether the task at hand is a slalom turn or a strike in a 10-pin bowling alley, a cover drive or a pass from the base of the scrum.

Key moments that swung the final

 Women's final
The balance of women's power swings to the big hitters
A fter a brief interlude, when from 1997 to the beginning of last year the more subtle and cerebral skills of Switzerland's Martina Hingis ruled the courts, power players are back in charge of women's tennis.

Venus the new torchbearer
So, Miss Venus Williams, at what point in the last two weeks did you know you were going to win the Wimbledon singles title?

Venus runs rings round Lindsay
Venus Williams completed her remarkable journey from a hard place to a rapturous ovation on tennis's greatest stage yesterday when she outslugged the title-holder Lindsay Davenport for an emphatic - if sometimes erratic - 6-3 7-6 victory in the women's final.

Freedom and spirit
Like the weather, she didn't know quite where to go. As the clouds skirted Wimbledon, Venus Williams's first - and wholly admirable - instinct after winning the women's final was to rush away from the scene of victory to embrace her younger sister and father.

Fairytale rise from the ghetto is ripe for the Hollywood treatment
When Los Angeles last had a spectacular sporting victory - the win by the LA Lakers in the NBA finals last month - the city rather disgraced itself, what with a small riot, the torching of police cars and the looting of stores near the stadium. The reaction to the triumph of Venus, a former resident of Compton, one of the city's poorest areas, has been very different.

 Other news and features
More than new balls...
A few feet away from where the most influential man in tennis is telling me about the need to improve the game's appeal, Venus Williams and Martina Hingis have the Centre Court in their thrall in a monumental quarter-final. That's the trouble with sporting geniuses, they can reduce logic to irony with a few swipes of racket, bat or club.

Henman will stand by his man
Tim Henman and his coach, David Felgate, played golf together last Thursday, determined that neither their friendship nor their professional relationship should be affected by the criticism that followed the British No1's earliest exit from Wimbledon since 1995. 'Nothing's going to change, I can assure you,' Felgate told me as he drove to the course.
