Wendy Richard

Wendy Richard, 57, was born in Middlesbrough. Her parents worked in the licensed trade, and she was brought up in London, where she went to Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. She had parts in Dixon of Dock Green and Dad's Army before landing her first big role, Shirley Brahms, in Are You Being Served? She is one of the original cast members of EastEnders, and has been playing Pauline Fowler for 15 years. She recently received the MBE and published her autobiography.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

A whole day at home on my own with no lines to learn and no washing to do.

What is your greatest fear?

Being late for work - they fine us!

Which living person do you most admire?

Mollie Sugden, for combining career and motherhood, being a splendid actress and baking wonderful cakes.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

Intolerance.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Unprofessionalism.

What vehicles do you own?

I don't drive: I failed my test six times.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Clothes and bags.

What objects do you always carry with you?

My mobile phone, which plays The Archers' theme tune.

What makes you depressed?

The way this country is going.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

The bags under my eyes.

What is your most unappealing habit?

Smoking.

What is your favourite building?

Buckingham Palace.

How did you vote in the last election?

Conservative.

How will you vote in the next election?

Conservative.

Do you believe in capital punishment?

Yes.

Do you believe in monogamy?

Yes.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

It's a toss up between my partner John and my cairn terrier, Shirley Brahms II.

'Can I have a cup of tea, please?'

What is your greatest regret?

Ever having got married.

How do you relax?

Listen to the radio and do my tapestry.

How would you like to be remembered?

She was alright.
