Ban for 'crude' coach Royce

Special report: the Sydney Olympics

Jon Royce, coach of the Great Britain women's team, has been banned from his team's third match, against South Korea today, after allegedly using "crude and inappropriate language" to a woman official after Britain's defeat by Argentina on Monday.

Royce who has a reputation for being hot-headed at times, made his comments to a doping control escort when he gathered his team for a meeting. He claims he was unaware that the woman had anything to do with dope control.

The ban has been authorised by Annabel Dillon Ess, the women's technical director in overall charge of the tournament. Royce will not be allowed anywhere near the team once they are in the stadium, although the ban does not preclude him preparing them for the game.

Chris Spice, the Great Britain performance director, already assisting Royce on the bench, is likely to take charge for one match.

The British team have de cided not to appeal against the ban, because it would distract from preparations for this crucial game.

Royce has not denied the incident. He said: "My comments were not directed at the official but she has taken offence and I regret this incident. I want to now get on with the job at hand and prepare the players for our next game."

Britain, after losing their first two matches here, have to win their final two pool matches, against South Korea and Spain, if they are to qualify for the final top-six play-offs.
