Racist gang attacks school team

Race issues in the UK: special report

Police are hunting a racist gang who invaded an inter-school football match, taunting black players and chasing them across the pitch with a car.

Pupils from Roundhay high school in Leeds ran to their minibus under a hail of bricks after the game was abandoned when fighting broke out, leaving one player with a head wound and spectators suffering minor injuries.

Detectives are questioning people in the Cross Green area where the match between Roundhay and Mount St Mary's Catholic high school had been trouble free until the gang appeared.

Windows were smashed in the Roundhay minibus and the school's head, Neil Clephan, said one of his team had been injured and a parent had been slightly hurt.

The Leeds schools cup semi-final was between 15 and 16-year-old boys, with two black Roundhay players singled out by the gang for abuse. An initial pitch invasion was dealt with by staff and players but youths in a Ford Fiesta then drove over the touchline while others fetched bricks and stones.
