Are you happy?

A new survey has discovered that most Britons are miserable, never passing up an opportunity to complain. What about you? Do you feel life has dealt you an unfair hand? Or are you happy with your lot?

It's official: Britons are miserable

Question 1 The alarm sounds at 7am on Monday. Rain lashes your window and your partner is snoring. What is your first thought?

Four days until Friday. But he/she might have left me by then. Oh God!
Another 10 minutes of sleep won't do any harm
If I'm in work by 8am I can make a start on that cracking new report. And it's nearly time for breakfast!
If I give him/her a hug, he/she might get up first and make some coffee

Question 2 You're 15 and you've locked your bedroom door. What are you doing?

Playing Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now by the Smiths and hiding under the bedclothes
Sneaking out of the window for a rendezvous with your beloved
Dancing around the room to Abba's Super Trouper
Writing your journal to the strains of the Pet Shop Boys' What Have I Done to Deserve This?

Question 3 You found £200 in used notes in the street and public-spiritedly handed it in to the local police station, hoping that no one would claim it. But you lose the slip and can't reclaim the haul. What's your reaction?

Maybe the owner claimed it. I hope so - I didn't really need it
How much worse can things get?
I'm an idiot. But I wasn't counting on the money and those notes were probably stolen
Damn! I could have sunk 20 bottles of vodka with that

Question 4 Your ideal partner would be:

  Up for it and cheerful
  Wealthy, but guilty with it
You're living together already. And it's heaven
  Patient, understanding and forgiving

Question 5 Do you believe in fate?

  Yes. I've been so lucky
Tosh. I worked hard to get where I am today
No, it's rubbish. I brought this on myself
Yes. Why else would life be this bad, after all my hard work?

Question 6 Do you vote?

What's the point? Doesn't make any difference
Only if I really support a particular party
Of course, even in European elections. My grandmother was a suffragette
I always go to the polling station - so I can spoil the ballot paper

Question 7 Do you believe the world will end?

Yes, and good riddance to it
If we take more care of the environment, we might hang on for a few more thousand years
Yes - the wrath of the Lord is almost upon us - but I'll be saved
Of course it will - when the sun swells to engulf the earth in a few billion years' time

Question 8 What would be your desert island book?

  The Bible
  Franz Kafka's The Trial
A boxed set of JK Rowling's Harry Potter
  Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe
