Earthquake toll could top 1,600

Special report: natural disasters

  • guardian.co.uk, Tuesday January 16 2001 11.27 GMT

More than 600 bodies have been recovered and a further 1,000 people are still missing in El Salvador following the massive earthquake which struck the Central American state at the weekend.

Another man was dragged alive from the rubble yesterday. The quake, which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, also killed six people in neighbouring Guatemala.

The authorities have begun mass burials, admitting the identities of many who died may never be known. As the ground dries out, the chances of finding alive anyone buried in houses wrecked by a mudslide are diminishing.

Aftershocks as strong as magnitude 5.4 have rattled the unstable soil and rubble. Saturday's earthquake, off El Salvador's Pacific coast, was felt as far north as central Mexico - more than 1,100 miles away.

Britain's department of international development is donating £600,000 aid.
