UN chief expected to visit Myanmar in December

Wednesday August 20, 2008  12:01 pm

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - Myanmar's main opposition party says it has been told that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will visit in December to hold talks on the country's political problems.

Nyan Win, a spokesman for the National League for Democracy party, said it was informed Wednesday by visiting U.N. special envoy Ibrahim Gambari of the visit.

Gambari met with five executive committee members of the party, which is led by detained Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. He arrived Monday in Yangon on a five-day mission to promote national reconciliation and political reform.

It is Gambari's fourth trip to the military-ruled country since a deadly crackdown on anti-government protesters last September sparked a global outcry.
